When is the best time to plan an interior design project?
If you're looking to get started on an interior design project but aren't sure when to start, don't worry. There's no one right answer for everyone. The best time to begin planning an interior design project is when you feel inspired and ready to take action. The truth is that many people put off their dream projects because they feel unsure about what they want or where to start. That's why I'm going to share with you five different scenarios when my clients made the decision to start their next big project!
When you're feeling inspired
The best time to plan an interior design project is when you're feeling inspired. If you have a specific goal in mind, like "I want my apartment to be cozy and comfortable," or "I want my ensuite to feel like a spa," then this is the perfect time for planning. When you can visualize your goals more clearly, it's easier for your brain to get creative about how those goals might be achieved.
When inspiration strikes, ask yourself questions like: What do I want to accomplish with this project? What are the important elements that need visualizing? Which elements are most important (and why)? How will these elements work together as parts of a whole?
When your lifestyle is changing
If you’re moving into a new house or apartment, it might be time to make it your own!
If you're getting married or having a baby, you'll want your space to be personalized and reflect the changes in your life.
Retirement is another reason people decide to redecorate their homes. Once they're no longer working, they can spend more time at home and want to make updates to reflect this new period in their lives.
Before you list your house for sale
Having an interior design project completed before listing can significantly affect the result of your sale. However, I say this with a caveat from my previous experience as a realtor. If you’re going to do a renovation to sell, make sure you consult an interior designer because what you like, may not be what the general public likes. If the renovation isn’t done well or in a style that isn’t marketable, it won’t add value to your property. In fact, it could be a way for the buyers to negotiate the price DOWN! I’ve often seen buyers rip out brand new renovations because it was done poorly for a quick buck or the style and/or layout isn’t ideal.
After moving into a new place
After moving into a new place, you're confronted with a blank canvas and can make big changes. Whether you have a tiny studio or an expansive penthouse, this is the time to get rid of things you don't need and start fresh. It's also a great time to make some long term plans like painting walls bold colors or investing in storage solutions that will fit your lifestyle over the next few years. If you think you might be having kids one day (or even if not), now would be an ideal time to plan their bedrooms so they'll have everything they need when they come along!
Anytime!!
You can start planning an interior design project at any time. There's no time like the present to start planning an interior design project. You don't need to wait for a specific season of the year or a particular date on the calendar, and there's no reason why you should hold off starting your project until then—it will get done when it gets done.
If you're feeling stuck with how to go about planning your interior design project, here are some things you can do:
Think about what is important to you in this space and how it makes you feel
What patterns or colors would match those feelings? Do they come from nature or other places?
How much room do these things take up in your life right now? How do they impact other aspects of your life (for example, work or family)?
